Even in situations where your heat pump switches between heating and cooling modes, it shouldn’t run constantly in your home in Peoria, IL. If your heat pump isn’t shutting off, contact a professional technician. Here are a few heat pump issues that can cause your system to run almost constantly.
Thermostat Wiring Issues
While it’s uncommon, a wire could come loose as the heat pump is running. That loose wire could interfere with the communication between the heat pump and the thermostat, which could cause the heat pump to continue running even after your home reaches the right temperature.
Clogged Filter
Heat pumps work slower at heating than furnaces because they produce warm air in the 90-degree range rather than the 110-degree range. So, if the filter is dirty and restricts the airflow, then the heat pump will have to work that much longer to reach the right temperature.
You might also have dirt and debris on and/or around the condenser coil in the outdoor portion of your heat pump. If, after changing the filter, your heat pump continues to run, then it’s a good idea to have an expert check the outdoor condenser coil.
It Could Be the Fan
If your thermostat is set to “on” rather than “auto,” then the fan will continue to run until you turn it off. If you switch your thermostat to “auto,” then the fan will shut off fairly quickly if you’re already at the right temperature. If it doesn’t, then you might need to schedule professional repair services.
